Over and Over

Over and Over

A BFA Capstone Project presented as part of the Live Acts Festival 2023 at SFU School for the Contemporary Arts

Combining the unapologetic elements of both drag and rock and roll, Over and Over embraces the bedroom self. The self that is unafraid, the self that dances alone at 11pm. We begin onstage with the performers in various poses, music fades in and the performers fall to the ground and rise to the beat. Like a forest fire, performers destroy themselves in order to be reborn. The performers cycle through phases of destruction and reconstruction, finding ways to inhabit the spaces in between. Over and Over offers a framework for a regenerative cycle of falling apart, alternating phases of endurance, exhaustion, love, and rest.

The work stems from a practice of rocking out, a form of letting loose. Performers are invited to channel their inner rock stars and present that version of themselves on stage. Inspired by the glam rock era, performers don exaggerated make-up, colourful costumes and lip sync to David Bowie. Leather jackets and lipstick become the entry point to becoming Joan Jett. A table is a concert stage, but it is also a bed at a sleepover where teenagers compare personality quiz answers from a cosmopolitan magazine.

March 30th, 2023. Studio D, SFU Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.
